S n o w + R o c k E n d u r o 2 0 1 9On the weekend of 26 and 27 October2019, Afriski Mountain Resort hostedanother great edition of the Snow+RockEnduro motorcycle event. The recentwarmer weather put paid to any lastvestiges of winter snow, there were morethan enough rocks on the route to makethis a rewarding and challenging eventfor participants of novice, intermediateand advanced skill levels. This partnership betweenAfriski and Wild West EnduroTrack delivered an event that –to judge from all the feedbackreceived – was perfectly pitchedto offer a balance of seriousriding challenges and family fun.The setting for Snow+Rock -high in Lesotho’s stunning MalutiMountains – provided uniqueriding and exceptional viewsacross the Mountain Kingdom. The altitude and rocky natureof the routes for the event arenot dissimilar to that which willbe encountered at the iconicMotul Roof of Africa. This addedan extra dimension for manyof the Advanced riders, whorelished the additional trainingopportunity with the Roof onlyweeks away.Intermediate riders got toexperience the satisfaction ofpushing themselves and theirmotorcycles that little bit harderthan usual, and the Novice riderscould revel in that wonderfullyinvigorating blend of pride andrelief that comes at the end ofany outride in Lesotho.56 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2019

After somefun, competitive riding, thepodium on day 2 comprisedBrett Swanepoel in first, JacoDen Heyer in second andDylan Jones in third. Brett, inparticular, was in superb formand he has clearly put last year’ssevere wrist injury behindhim. His ultimate goal for thisyear, is a podium finish at theMotul Roof of Africa, would capwhat has been a remarkablecomeback year for him.Wild West’s FrancoisMarais, one of the founders ofthe event and owner of WildWest Enduro Track, professedhimself very happy with howthe event went:“The feedback from theriders was overwhelminglysupportive of the event andmany were asking for the 2020Snow+Rock dates to add theevent to their annual ridingcalendar. The dates will bereleased soon. The idea is tohost it a little bit later in theyear.” Watch this space.Martin Schultz, Snow+RockEnduro Route Director, made apoint of thanking his marshalsfor their efforts in keeping allthe riders safe and helpingthem to successfully negotiatetough passes like the notoriousDouble Dutch.“We were happy to seefamily members and friendsDIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2019 57
