The KTM 350: Our

The KTM 350: Our intention was to try not to duplicate brands in this feature, but finding a demo from the other brands proved challenging. Three European manufacturers make the 350. Beta, KTM and Husqvarna. To date, the Japanese have not started playing in this market. The 350 four stroke feels really predictable – and it is easy to understand why these bikes are so popular. A bit more chugalug than a modern 250, perhaps less wild than the Yammie, but perceptibly more powerful - without being a handful like some of the 450’s. Back to setup. Dayna Nienaber on her 350 was a joy to watch, fast and smooth, and at one with her bike. You can tell that time has been spent setting this bike up for her. We won’t speculate on her weight – that would be ungentlemanly, but even us slightly heavier riders felt very comfortable flinging the KTM through the trees and up and down the sides of a quarry. With the light weight and smooth power delivery, this bike is just waiting for the rider to snap the throttle on and it will head for the hills…it’s fast and smooth – perfect for a rider who does not enjoy revving a 250, but who does not want the grunt of a bigger cc bike or the snap of a 2-stroke. How is the big Suzuki 450 four stroke enduro bike? Well, it’s now four years old, and although being solid and up to date, with a very smooth and torquey motor and an electric start, the bike didn’t have the benefit of an ace tuner before letting it out onto the trail. This one has just on 3000 km’s on the clock – but it is still current because the new models are just the same. The RMX is also derived from an MX machine, Suzuki’s world beating RMZ – and once again you can feel it. This bike simply was not as sharp as it should be – and it really would benefit from a visit to a guy like Hilton Hayward for some work. It is exactly what you would expect from an old school 450 – lots of raw power on tap - instant throttle response and grin inducing factor second to none. We love the lookand let’s face it, you don’t see too many Suzuki off-road bikes on the trails these days. Quite sad really. This bike just simply didn’t have the sharpness of the other bikes on the day. We’ll make it a project to get this bike set-up properly and we guarantee it will be a whole new beasty. 28 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE MARCH 2016 1603 DT multi dirtbikes.indd 28 2016/02/21 11:48 AM Kata 1602
